With war looming, young Ursula Bacon and her Jewish family fled from Germany to Shanghai with its promise of freedom. Instead they found ghettos and abysmal conditions. But the hard life endured by those in the Shanghai ghetto paled in comparison to those left in Germany. As a result, the "Shanghai Jews" have been all but lost in history.
